The Dello Russo story begins long before the first LASIK eye surgeries were done in the 90s. In 1980, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo purchased a research laser from a new company called VISX. Shortly thereafter, the FDA selected him to do exclusive research on refractive vision correction, testing the laser with patients. This research would eventually lead to the FDA approving LASIK in 1996.

Throughout the 1990s, Dr. Dello Russo’s input was crucial for establishing LASIK as the common and widespread procedure it is today—radio host Howard Stern even dubbed him the “godfather” of laser vision surgery. Many of the LASIK procedures and safety guidelines in place now are the direct result of Dr. Dello Russo’s early research.

Sharing His Findings With the Community

Since 1990, Dr. Dello Russo has generously shared his ophthalmologic knowledge and extensive experience with other LASIK surgeons and practitioners. He has offered lectures at national and international conferences and has authored several academic papers based on his surgical practice. Dr. Joseph Dello Russo also focused on training other surgeons in his specialty. He has offered open-access seminars in his practice where hundreds of other LASIK surgeons were trained by himself and his son, Dr. Jeffrey Dello Russo.

Dr. Joseph Dello Russo’s Outstanding Career and Legacy in Ophthalmology

Before Dr. Joseph Dello Russo focused primarily on his LASIK eye surgery career, he was one of the leading cataract surgeons in the country. Many significant developments in laser cataract treatments in the 70s and 80s are thanks to Dr. Dello Russo’s work at the New Jersey Eye Center. Dr. Dello Russo founded the New Jersey Eye Center in 1967, and the facility continues to provide multi-specialty eye care today under the direction of his other son, Dr. James Dello Russo. Apart from performing some of the first implant surgeries for cataracts, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo introduced and prompted the widespread use of the Yag laser. He was also responsible for the first ambulatory surgical center (ASG) for the eyes in the Northeast, making Dr. Dello Russo a pioneer not just in ophthalmology but also in the medical profession as well.
