How Long Does LASIK Surgery Take in Westport?

LASIK surgery is short, usually completed in 30 minutes or less. We will start with numbing eye drops to ensure you do not feel pain. After the surgery, we will provide an eye shield to protect your corneas. This will also help prevent you from rubbing your eyes.

How Long Is the Recovery Time After LASIK?

The recovery period after LASIK is relatively short and simple, lasting about two days. You will need to rest your eyes for several hours immediately after the procedure. Your doctor will encourage you to take a nap or relax in a dark room when you go home. For the following 24 hours after surgery, avoid looking at screens, reading, or doing anything else that could make your eyes strain. You will have a follow-up appointment 24-48 hours after your procedure. During this appointment, your surgeon will check to ensure the healing process is going well in order to give you the green light to drive and return to work. It is important to be careful with you eyes for the next weeks and follow your surgeon’s instructions.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

While most people qualify for LASIK, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Ideal candidates meet the following requirements:

  • You are not pregnant or nursing
  • Your eyes, body, and overall health are such that you’re eligible for the procedure
  • You are at least 18 years old
  • Your hormones and vision have stabilized
  • Your corneas are at least 0.5mm thick

Can I Return to Work the Next Day After My LASIK Procedure?

Within about a day of your surgery, you will have a post-operative appointment with your surgeon. Your surgeon will check on your healing, assess your vision improvement, and discuss any symptoms or side effects you may be experiencing. This is also the point when your surgeon will clear you to drive and return to work and your usual activities. However, it is important to continue to be careful about not rubbing your eyes or causing irritation.

How Common Are Complications After LASIK?

It is uncommon to experience complications after LASIK–the complication rate is less than 1%. This is why LASIK is well known as one of the safest elective surgeries available today. However, it is still helpful to know the potential lasting side effects, even if the risk is very small. Initial Common mild side effects such as dry eye, glare, halos, double vision, or light sensitivity usually resolve as the eyes heal. There is a slight chance that these side effects can persist. Other risks include:

  • Flap complications
  • Corneal inflammation
  • Infection
  • Over, under, or uneven correction.

Because complications are so rare, only 1.2% of patients are dissatisfied with their vision improvement.

How Likely Will I Get 20/20 Vision After LASIK?

According to a review of 97 peer-reviewed clinical studies, 90.8% of study participants achieved 20/20 vision or better after LASIK eye surgery. 99.5% achieved 20/40 vision or better. Statistics can be improved with more precise surgical methods, including custom LASIK and wavefront mapping to identify higher-order vision errors. These are the methods used at Dello Russo Laser Vision to ensure we provide the best possible vision correction.

What Is the Likelihood That Something Might Go Wrong During My LASIK Procedure?

Because LASIK complications are very rare and experienced by fewer than 1% of patients, the chance of anything going wrong during the LASIK procedure is quite low. The complication rate also decreases depending on the experience of the surgeon. This is why finding an experienced eye surgeon like those at Dello Russo is so important.

Temporary side effects are relatively common but typically disappear quickly as the cornea heals. We use the most modern technology to improve the safety of your surgery and to achieve the most precise vision correction possible.
